We had blueberry pie for dinner. FOR dinner.

A little Smartfood as an appetizer.  Followed by……..homemade blueberry pie.

In July and August, I’m just that sorta mom.  R e l a x e d…….

I say things that I would never ever ever say September-June, like:

“Lets have pie for dinner!  And margaritas for breakfast!”

OK.  NOT margaritas for breakfast.  Very. Bad. Idea. I was getting a little carried away.

I couldn’t help it though.

There is a serious bumper crop of blueberries happening on the island that faces our cottage.  At least all this rain has been good for something.  The last two years – barely enough for a single batch of muffins, but this year – whoa – blueberry heaven.

Paisley and I went picking this afternoon and got enough for a couple of pies in an hour.  You should know that Paisley ate as much as she put in the cup (her face was purple like that girl in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)……and our Charlie ate, and ate, and ate, until, well, he just had to lie down and have a little nap.

He is the best blueberry picker ever.  Watch this clip:

(Who am I kidding?  I don’t know how to upload video here.  Once I learn there will be a video of Charlie picking/eating blueberries.  You’ll love it.  I think….)

When he is chowing down berries, leaving a trail of slimy slobber covered leaves, I imagine how many fricken blueberries a bear must eat to sustain himself.  Crazy.  Charlie finds berries a nice diversion from his standard all-you-can-eat-compost-bucket-buffet we ‘lay’ out for him behind the cottage.  To be honest, the dog does not smell all that tremendously great.

When you have berries as good as today – you have to do something with them stat. Thing was – it was just Paisley and I at the cottage – nary a hungry neighbor in site.  (we did not look too hard) And, well, dessert typically comes last (why??) and sometimes you’re just to full to really really grasp the splendidity of a homemade-picked-the-berries-yourself pie.

So we made a couple of little dinner sized pies.  And ate them warm from the oven.  With cream.  Looking out at the lake, listening to the loons……and Charlie’s stomach making incredible unearthly sounds.

We had blueberry pie for dinner.  FOR dinner.

Hoepfully, Paisley doesn’t tell all her friends about it.  I really don’t want to be glared at by the good moms.  Cam and I are still getting over the time Read took homemade moose-road-kill -meatballs to school in his thermos.  (Not. Popular.)  But that’s a whole other story…..

Wanna make your own homemade pie and have it for dinner?  I won’t judge.  I’ll high five you – as long as it’s July or August.  Here’s a recipe.  Rustic Ugly Fruit Pies
